Do you lock the doors of your private practice every night when you head home? We bet you do!
Believe it or not, some private practices don’t take the same precautions when it comes to the digital side of things. By having insecure passwords, using poor encryption, and by lacking data backup, they’re essentially leaving their digital door wide open. In a business where your clients’ information security is paramount, that’s unforgivable.
That’s why Owl Practice offers industry-leading security for private practices. We do everything from providing secure payment options and bank-level encryption to keeping your valuable data on Canadian servers. Here are some of the ways we’re protecting the client data of Canadian mental health professionals just like you!
Protecting Personal Health Information
Protecting your clients’ personal health information should be a top priority when selecting a digital practice management solution. If your practice management solution isn’t taking your security seriously, then it isn’t doing its job. At Owl Practice, we take several steps to make sure that all of the data you store with us is safe and secure.
Let’s talk about the importance of keeping your data in the country. Unlike other online storage services—e.g. Google Drive or Dropbox—we store every bit of your data on our dedicated Canadian servers in Montreal and Toronto. There are two benefits to this:
First, your data is fully protected by Canadian privacy laws. Owl is entirely PHIPA and college compliant, which means that foreign entities will never have access to your data. It’s stored right here in Canada, where no one can get at it.
Second, because all of the data is on our servers, none of it is on your devices. That means if you visit another country, border security will not be able to make copies of any of your data because it’s not on your devices. You can go on vacation in another country, secure in the knowledge that you’ll still have full access to your practice without worrying about other people getting access when you try to come home.
Encryption is Key
Okay, but let’s say that there is a black-hat hacker out there who desperately wants to get access to your data. If that’s the case, you’ll need some top-level encryption in place to make sure the hacker can’t access it.
All of our digital services use bank-level encryption (SSL) to encrypt everything sent or received by your devices and our servers. Even if someone manages to intercept the information, they won’t be able to do anything with it. In fact, it might as well be gibberish to them!
Client Payment Information
As a mental health professional, you’re often storing your clients’ most private data—and we aren’t just talking about mental health info.
With Owl Practice, you can store your clients’ payment data right inside their profile. After all, that’s how we facilitate our invoicing and payment features! But your clients might be worried about you keeping their payment info on hand for easy billing.
That’s why all financial transactions done through Owl are PCI compliant. The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) has put this standard into place to prevent credit card fraud, meaning that all organizations that handle payments must abide by these regulations.
At Owl, we use Stripe Payments to provide you and your clients with a secure integrated option for processing all credit card transactions. They are a Level-1 PCI compliment provider, meaning that all of your clients’ payment info will be saved securely and vaulted inside Stripe.
These are just a few of the digital security measures that we’ve put into place to ensure that Owl Practice is the more secure practice management solution available in Canada today. We’re always working to refine our security measures and protect your data, so when we come out with any new features, we’ll be sure to give you a heads up!
