Right to Privacy
One of the most pressing concerns in the mental health field is privacy. Talking about mental health isn’t easy and the idea that someone else might have access to your personal data can be nerve-wracking. As a therapist, your clients are entrusting you with their most valuable and vulnerable information. It’s your job as a therapist to to safeguard their privacy—and it’s our job too.
In Canada, we thankfully have strong laws, such as PHIPA compliance, that protect the privacy rights of clients. When you use Owl Practice as your practice management solution, all of your clients’ information is stored on Canadian servers using bank-level encryption (SSL). This information is completely protected by Canadian privacy laws, meaning that it’s safely out of the hands of foreign agencies.
As an extra layer of security, all of your practice’s information is stored in its own segregated database. This means that you can only access the data through a customized, account-specific URL. No data is stored on any of your devices. If you go on a trip to the United States, for example, and you’re stopped for a search at the border, there will be no client or practice data stored on your phone.
Finally, you can rest assured that everything you store on Owl Practice servers is your information. You are the owner of that data; we’re just the ones you’re entrusting it to for safekeeping.

While the United States refers to itself a melting pot, in Canada we are a mosaic. That means that many unique cultures have come together, existing side by side in harmony and tolerance. Canadians are famous for being open-minded and progressive when it comes to race, sexuality, and religion. We support each other in ways that other disadvantaged countries can only wish for. And of course Canadians are notoriously polite!
In this spirit, we recognize that not all mental health professionals (or their clients) are the same.
