Planning for Emergencies – Smart Practice Planning for Accidents and Emergencies

What will happen to your practice if you’re no longer capable of working?

This is a situation that anyone in the field of mental health, medicine, and many other professional services must plan for as part of the operation of a private practice. Whether you’re a therapist, psychologist, or social worker, someone has to be responsible for your files and data in the case of an emergency.

For this reason, you must make arrangements to have a Power of Attorney so that someone can take responsibility and make the necessary arrangements for your practice. If you haven’t already done so, you should seek legal counsel to arrange for a Power of Attorney as part of your practice planning. This legal document gives another party the legal authority to act on your behalf in order to settle matters pertaining to your practice.

All regulations and requirements for cases of accident, emergency, impairment, or death where you are unable to make decisions for your practice and someone else must make decisions on your behalf under a Power of Attorney must be managed directly with the Canadian College of Professional Counsellors and Psychotherapists (CCPCP). When someone is acting on your behalf under a Power of Attorney, Owl Practice will comply and furnish the necessary data, in conjunction with and as directed by the CCPCP. The legal process should be followed directly with the College. For more information, please contact the CCPCP directly: https://www.ccpcp.ca/contact-us.aspx

As always,

Practice Wisely
