What Are the Different Applications of AI for Mental Health Professionals?

Artificial intelligence (AI) promises to revolutionize the way many businesses work. That potential even extends to mental health care, but as with all technology in sensitive areas, it’s best to approach it carefully. What are the different applications of AI for mental health professionals, and how can you capitalize on them safely?

Here’s a look at a few of the biggest AI mental health applications, as well as some things AI can’t do for therapists.

Notetaking

One of AI’s most beneficial uses in mental health is to improve session notes. Digital tools make it easier to take and organize detailed notes without losing focus on the present moment with a client. AI can take this functionality further by automatically compiling notes from calls or in-person sessions, highlighting important details, or organizing and storing records for future reference.

Scheduling

Smart scheduling is another simple but impactful application of AI in mental health. Scheduling sessions and follow-ups is a crucial part of a practice’s daily operations, but it takes time away from core work. AI tools can automatically schedule appointments, confirm times with clients, or adjust times as needed to simplify the process while avoiding calendar conflicts.

Client Service Chatbots

AI-powered chatbots can also offer needed support when therapists aren’t available. While AI can never replace professional advice, it can provide immediate assistance 24/7 to schedule appointments or direct clients to helpful resources, even when therapists can’t get to the phone. This availability ensures people can get some level of help whenever they need it.

Admin and Research

Other AI mental health applications include automating basic administrative tasks and streamlining research. Some therapists find AI useful for getting quick answers to some questions or directing them to more in-depth resources on a topic. AI can also summarize content, automate billing, and streamline communication with other staff at the clinic.

What AI Can’t Do

As helpful as AI can be, some areas must remain fully in the control of experienced and qualified therapists. Most importantly, AI cannot replace clinical judgment or dispense mental health advice. It can point people to resources and help therapists take notes, but it cannot perform the core work of an actual therapist. AI should also not manage sensitive client data, as using it for this purpose could lead to privacy breaches.
